The power of radio can change the world. I've worked in radio (both terrestrial and satellite) from podcasts to prime-time to the business lunch-hour. As an active participant in expanding radio's reach for over three decades, I've seen how radio democratizes access to news, music, art, ideas, politics, sports and so much more. Like you, I love listening, learning, and experiencing life, and I find no way better to do so than enjoying good radio—and KPFK provides EXCELLENT radio. With my years of radio experience, plus my background in politics and civil service, I'd be honored to help KPFK not only grow its audience but to continue and expand its thoughtful programming as Local Board Delegate. But be warned, my passion for people is contagious!

Answers to Candidate Questionnaire

1. What experience, connections, skills or traits would you bring to the local station board to advance the station's mission?
I've been working in the intersection of radio and politics since the 90s. While at school in Boston I was hired from intern to producer for Bradley J's rush-hour rock show at the now defunct WBCN. At the same time, I was also a nanny for the children of the former advisor to President Clinton and head economics professor at Harvard. Since then I have continued in radio moving from terrestrial to satellite at SiriusXM where I was showrunner for Randi Zuckerberg's weekly business show 'Dot Complicated.' I produced one of the first-ever online dating podcasts which is still running today. I currently Executive Produce two podcasts; one narrative and one political. Working in both radio and politics has taught me to be more open to ideas, to people, to mistakes, and to possibilities. I am a listener by trade and that skill is invaluable when it comes to the growth, change, and adaptation of responsible radio, news and journalism as a whole.


2. What do you appreciate and value in the station's current operations?
The variety of voices and opinions available to all. The honesty and integrity of the stations themselves. And the array of music from around the world.


3. What would you like to see improved or changed in the station's current operations?
I'd like to see KPFK and its sister stations become a go-to for news, commentary, and music. To do so, that costs money, effort and time, so the fundraising would have to increase. But thoughtful, mindful, fundraising is much better than interrupting programming to ask for money. I'd like to implement a fundraising plan that exists offline / off-air as well. People are getting out of their house again, so now is a great time to plan for fundraising offline.


4. Describe what you anticipate would be your top three priorities or areas of focus if you were elected to the local station board.
1. To get more programming for and by women of color on the air
2. Encouraging new voices of today's youths and Millennials.
3. Honest forums, town halls and discussions with the community for what THEY are looking for and how those needs can be implemented into current programming.


5. Sustainability is an important part of any nonprofit operation. What are your thoughts on how the board can help to improve the station's financial footing?
I spoke on this a tad in Question 3, but to elaborate, when you fundraise it can't only be to the same group of listeners, the doors to financial footing must be opened and explained to all. Fundraising needs to be taken off-air and into the streets. Now is the time to capitalize on the want and need of people to connect offline. To get more supporters and more funds, we need to grow the audience IRL (in real life). Events, block parties, live music, volunteer opportunities are all wonderful, fun, bonding experiences that allow people to WANT to give. We need to think off-air to create better programming on-air.


6. Is there anything else you would like prospective voters to know?
I'm a passionate Los Angeles nerd and proud American dork. I've traveled to every US state except Alaska and, besides LA, I have lived in Chicago, New York, Portland, and Boston. I'm a Dodgers season ticket holder and an active donor to everyone from the Apollo Theater in Harlem to Valley Beth Shalom in Encino.
