Why The Social Uplift Foundation is sponsoring the
Clean Up Pacific Project (CUPP)
The Pacifica Foundation was established 70 years ago in 1946 by a group of dedicated Pacifists. Starting with one radio station in Berkeley California, KPFA. Its finances were based on the concept of sustaining support from it's own membership, rather than the government, other nonprofit organizations, or commercial interests. Combining this principle with courageous and hard working programmers and staff , the Foundation grew and added four more stations, in New York - WBAI, Los Angeles - KPFK, Washington DC - WPFW. and in Houston Texas - KPFT. There are now also more than 150 affiliated smaller stations around the US and abroad. Pacifica also has a remarkable Pacifica Archives unit with tens of thousands of hours of recorded programming stretching back 60 years.
Following the Pacifica Mission Statement has always required clear vision and dedication, following worthwhile efforts that sometimes seem like lost causes. Periodically, some part of the operation gets run down or mired in internal conflicts. Then finances collapse, bills go unpaid and the broadcasting suffers. The stations lose some of their support from the general public. This happens to many non-profits, commercial interests and even governments, something we observe every day. Right now the Pacifica Foundation is slipping into a depression and needs help to restore the model. It's not as bad a situation as some have promoted, but if ignored or excused it will just get worse and yes, the Pacifica Foundation will be gone, consumed by commercial radio or sectarian political interests.
CUPP, The Clean Up Pacifica Project, is composed of some old timers and some new recruits, some members on National Board, and some on Local Station Boards. Some are just volunteers. There are lawyers, accountants, IT specialists, broadcasters and producers. Their mission is to restore sound fiscal policies to the Foundation and improve the scope and quality of the broadcast programming. They're definitely not looking to sit on the board for decades or get their own vanity radio programs or be hired as officers or managers. Their intent is to see that the i Pacifica Mission Statement is followed.
The Pacifica Radio Foundation and its radio stations and archives are vital media resources for educating and uplifting the general public. Therefore, the Social Uplift Foundation supports this effort to revitalize Pacifca and further the Pacifica Mission.
