Theresa Bonpane of the Office of the Americas summed up my qualifications when she said:
“Jan Goodman’s distinguished career in law and life expresses the quest for justice and peace which is the essence of the Pacifica Mission.

    ROOTS IN SOUTH CENTRAL
I grew up in Watts and remain active in South-Central L.A. My step-father, Oneil Cannon became the first African-American member of the Printer’s Union in LA. I grew up in an activist, bi-cultural home, thus recognizing racism & the need to fight it and its ill effects daily. KPFK needs to be part of that struggle.

Under my leadership, THE PAUL ROBESON COMMUNITY CENTER created its Filmmaking and Intercultural Youth Radio Training Projects in SouthL.A., taught by volunteer professionals. When one of our students covered (& marched in) an anti-war rally she said “Now I know what Martin Luther King felt like.”-–which explains why I am so committed to Radio Training at KPFK.

    SUNSET HALL
I led the struggle of residents and the community to SAVE SUNSET HALL, the retirement home for “Free Thinking Elders.” When we won, I was elected President of the board for six years—see http://sunsethall.org/about/articles/newday.htm

    INVOLVEMENT IN KPFK
I became involved with the FREE-PACIFICA MOVEMENT, realizing that there was nothing more important to the Left in Los Angeles than saving Pacifica—which is why I and my husband defended law suits filed against Pacifica. Our pro-bono work saved Pacifica over a hundred thousand dollars.

I served on the LSB from 2003-2009. However, we must now redouble our efforts to create high quality, diverse programs, including cultural, local, national, inter-national, musical, gender bending and intellectually diverse and to have a management structure which supports that diversity and creativity. My ability to forge productive relationships among people, as well as my legal, and fund raising skills will benefit our radio station.
