My name is Fiorella Isabel (Mayorca) and I’m running to be on the KPFK Board to bring a new creative and alternative voice into the waves of the stations backbone. After living in 5 different states as a child and visiting various countries in Europe, Central, and South America, I’ve come to understand that good communication can unite us and bridge an understanding between humans from any background. Bad communication can do the opposite, turning one against the other, funneling clouds of disarray and misinformation. Traveling, talking to people, and actually listening to how they perceive the world is key in building coalitions to further human progress. I’ve worked with California for Progress on various events, including a Bernie Sanders Rally, a meeting with Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, and helped voice my concern for Prop 10, working with several organizations in Sacramento. I’ve voiced my support for affordable housing at city council meetings and am a member and warrior of the #SheDoes community, an organization responsible for Garcetti’s much needed approval of funding for homelessness and shelters.

Indeed the radio is the oldest and most adaptable form, whether it be through airwaves or the modern podcast versions. People thousands of miles away become best friends through mutual slices of lives they share via story-telling, tragedy, or unity in chaos. Social media has helped accelerate this development. Social media is a tool we can use to further gain not only an understanding of our community around us but of how our community fits within other communities, our cities, states and countries as a whole.

As a member of the KPFK board, I would use my experience in cultural diversity to adapt our programming to better fit the needs of an event-changing diverse community. As a bilingual, daughter of immigrants and a first generation American, I’d strive to be as inclusive to those with language barriers, because their story is also our story. We must weave the cloth that binds America as a patch blanket of many cultures. Something that as of late, we’ve been challenged to maintain. We need to go to communities of color not as white saviors or charity markets, but as facilitators and comrades. My background in public relations, social media influence, and effective infra/inter personal communication will help guide a new type of mindset that seeks to build upon our diversity and growing concerns for health, public education, housing affordability, and public awareness of political diplomacy. In other words, we need to get the public engaged not only on social issues but also on economic issues affecting them every single day. In order to do that we have to help them see how effective their voice can be and regain the power of their vocal cords. It’s not that people don’t care, it’s that they feel like no one else does and they can’t change anything. So that’s why radio, news, media and information that is not beholden to any monetary interest other than public access is key for progress within our communities.

I hope to be able to implement my ideas for the future within the KPFK community, in whatever form it takes. I sincerely believe my diverse background, education, experience and abilities will aide the board and the station overall and I hope you will support me.
